Prescription painkillers, cold compresses, and over-the-counter painkillers are all options for managing dry socket pain. The best over-the-counter pain relievers for dry socket are NSAIDs (nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs), like acetaminophen and ibuprofen. Because they can ease pain and reduce swelling, cold compresses have been found to be useful in treating dry socket discomfort. As a cold compress, it is recommended to use a cold pack or a cooled tea bag.

For dry socket, prescription painkillers such non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medications (like ibuprofen) or narcotics with acetaminophen and codeine (like Tylenol® 3) are usually advised. When using medicine, dry socket pain usually goes away in one to three days.
